A Comparative Analysis of the Meat Sector in Hungary and Emilia-Romagna: Performance and Efficiency AgEcon
Brasili, Cristina; Fanfani, Roberto; Maccarini, Elisa Ricci; Monasterolo, Irene.
In the last years, a lot of important changes occurred inside the European Union after the entering of 12 new member States. The rate of economic growth of the new member States has been higher the other EU members. In Hungary, particularly, the growth level has reached an intermediate position, placing itself at 4% GDP per capita. Comparative analysis are needed to better understand the process of catching-up and to evaluate how the integration between EU regions and countries is going on. The aim of this paper is to compare the economic and efficiency performance of firms in Hungary and Emilia-Romagna, considering a specific sector, meat processing and storage, of the food industry). We will investigate if in the last years the integration process has...

Climate Change Impact on Rice Yield and Production Risk AgEcon
Kim, Man-Keun; Pang, Arwin.
The relationship among rice yield and weather variables in Korea is explored using a stochastic production function. The results reveal that average rice yield is positively related to temperature and negatively associated with precipitation. Both temperature and precipitation, which are risk-increasing inputs, are positively related to rice yield variability. The widened yield variability can be transferred to the fluctuation of rice production and rice price instability. Larger market risk is expected in the future since both temperature and precipitation are anticipated to increase. An evaluation of climate change impact on rice yield variability reveals that it may increase by up to 10%~20%. Reducing yield variability and managing market risk would be...

ON ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND RISK EXPOSURE IN THE NILE BASIN OF ETHIOPIA AgEcon
Di Falco, Salvatore; Veronesi, Marcella.
This study investigates the impact of climate change adaptation on farm households’ downside risk exposure (e.g., risk of crop failure) in the Nile Basin of Ethiopia. The analysis relies on a moment-based specification of the stochastic production function. We estimate a simultaneous equations model with endogenous switching to account for the heterogeneity in the decision to adapt or not, and for unobservable characteristics of farmers and their farm. We find that (i) climate change adaptation reduces downside risk exposure, i.e., farm households that implemented climate change adaptation strategies get benefits in terms of a decrease in the risk of crop failure; (ii) farm households that did not adapt would benefit the most in terms of reduction in...

Technical Efficiency of Smallholder Dairy Farmers in the Central Ethiopian Highlands AgEcon
Wubeneh, Nega; Ehui, Simeon K..
Despite having the second largest livestock population in Africa and favorable climate, the contribution of the livestock, especially the dairy sector to the Ethiopian economy is minimal. The per capita consumption of dairy products of 16 liters is one of the lowest in the world. With increasing income and urbanization, the demand for dairy products is expected to increase. A number of studies have examined the potential of the dairy sector to satisfy existing as well as future demand for dairy products. Most of the studies, however, focus on technological constraints such as poor genotype of indigenous animals, tropical animal diseases, availability of feed and other related services and recommend costly technological solutions aimed to alleviate those...
